Environmental Policy

Environmental Policy

BPA is ‘Keeping the UK moving 24/7/365’ by ‘managing pipelines and terminals safely and sustainably’.

To support this aim, BPA’s environmental policy commits us to:

  • Respect the environment through minimising emissions, waste, energy use and by improving biodiversity.
  • Respect our neighbours and positively contribute to the communities in which we operate.
  • Reducing our carbon emissions on an ongoing basis and achieving net zero by 2050.
  • Fulfil BPA’s compliance obligations, including legislation and standards.
  • Committed leadership systematically managing environmental matters as a business-critical activity taking account of foreseeable environmental risks and opportunities.
  • Continual improvement of BPA’s environmental management system to enhance our environmental performance.
  • Encouraging employees to actively participate in our HSSEQ groups to promote strong environmental and sustainability practices to employees.

To achieve these principles, BPA’s Leadership Team implement and maintain an environmental management system which:

  • Is externally certified to ISO 14001:2015.
  • Is appropriate to the purpose and context of BPA, including the nature, scale and environmental impacts of BPA’s activities.
  • Is implemented via a risk framework process and site assessment programmes.
  • Sets environmental objectives via an annual Health, Safety, Security, Environmental & Quality (HSSEQ) Plan.
  • Supports regular visible safety leadership at all levels of the organisation.
  • Is monitored regularly to review performance, ensure continuing suitability, undertake audit programmes, and perform an annual management review.

BPA shall:

  • Ensure that BPA’s environmental policy and management system are documented and consulted on within BPA and communicated to all employees, contractors and relevant interested parties.
  • Require adherence to the management system requirements and standards to which BPA subscribes, by all employees and relevant stakeholders.
  • Promote an environmentally aware culture in which all employees share a commitment to achieving a high standard of environmental performance.
  • Effectively control changes that could impact on the environment.
  • Investigate and report incidents and significant near misses, ensuring lessons are learnt and corrective actions are implemented promptly.
  • Maintain emergency response plans in consultation with relevant authorities and stakeholders.
  • Ensure that adequate resources are made available to meet this policy, including access to competent advisory support, and that employees are trained and competent to perform their assigned roles and responsibilities.
  • Apply appropriate environmentally sustainable principles, including life cycle perspective, efficient use of materials, water and energy resources and, where practicable, shall apply waste minimisation and recycling, carbon emission reduction and maintain biodiversity.
  • Learn from industry groups such as UKOPA, TSA, CONCAWE and FIUK.
  • Maintain a Carbon Reduction Plan to support our goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050.

BPA’s environmental policy is implemented through our environmental management system, as detailed in MAN-C-01.
