Booster Station Refurbishment

Royal Portbury Dock

The Booster Station at Royal Portbury Dock facility in Bristol supplies product into the 2000km GPSS system (Government Pipelines and Storage System) managed by OPA. The pumpstation which plays a key role in supplying aviation fuel to customers at Heathrow and other airports across the UK, is built on made up ground which had started to subside causing structural problems to site infrastructure and potential differential overstressing of the site pipework. The objective of the project was to correct this situation in a very limited shutdown window with costly tanker demurrage charges associated with any delays to the programme.

BPA acted as the Owner’s Engineer on the project from defining requirements, through
system design specification, to project management of Planning, Pre-Shutdown Construction activities and Construction, Commisioning and handback Phases. BPA delivered the project without disruption to the ongoing operation of this strategically important asset, at the same time saving the client a large amount of potential project spend by avoiding the need to implement a planned risk mitigation measure of bypassing the site to allow emergency operation should the project have overun.
